Local Organization President Speech

Past Presidents
Members of the Noble House
Fellow Jaycees

Let me start by sending you my warmest compliments of this special season. Happy New Year to you all.

It is with a sense of humility yet amidst huge expectations that I address you all. Maybe I boxed myself into a corner going by my electoral promises but so be it. It's my cross and I will bear it to the end by God's grace.

Come March this year, JCI Ikeja will be 30years old. Is it uhuru yet? What are your memoirs? Mixed feelings? We will do well to pause for a moment in sober self-introspection and individually conduct a character means test to determine the level of culpability of each and everyone of us in the hypocrisy and self-destructive streak that contributes a sizable share of our current state. Attending my maiden meeting at the Sheraton Hotel & Towers Ikeja ignited a passion in me: excellence, professionalism, style and class; little did I know that I will serving in this capacity years down the line ; a rare privilege indeed!Ours is an envious legacy of pioneers, trail blazers, et al- need I mention them?

We have always attracted the right talent but have lost them to politicking - a perennial trend that need be check mated in the interest of all and sundry.

What are the possible outcomes if we had successfully managed our crisis? Handled issues with maturity? Maybe: our membership would have hit a consistent 75, have an annual budget of N15M, sustainable and value-driven partnerships, produced another National President, monopolized - back to back- the offices of the National GLC and National Director of Training, JCIN International aspirants?

I do not have a crystal-ball but I know that with a genuine sense of love, propelling vision and brotherhood, we can predict the future;after all, nothing happens by chance! We can build a local organization that we will be proud of: a breeding ground for revolutionaries, global champions, astute business people, high-ranking career persons, political juggernauts; role models.

It is time to rebuild our WALLS! Let the task begin with GOD....Let us awaken a new spirit of patriotism; of service and responsibility where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder.

Let us resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship, pettiness and immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long. Can we please put mERIT before pOLITICS? We all have one thing in common, stones. Would you rather build walls or bridges? I am committed to the latter, what about you? My great concern is not whether we have failed but whether we are content with our failure. We can build a chapter not synonymous with conflict, but rather peace, respect for the law and equal opportunity.

The best thing about the future - my Presidential Theme - is that it comes one day at a time starting today. Building the FUTURE via the key drivers of people, process and possibilities - a deliberate order to rebuild our commonwealth- isn't just mere rhetoric s but a clarion call to build, serve and again build.

With the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders of the JCI Ikeja Project, we will put in place a system that will: attract and provide a conducive environment for our people, review/rebrand existing programs for maximum impact and explore meaningful possibilities towards ensuring a vibrant, growing,top-notch and world class brand. Yes, we will by God's grace.

NOW is the time to harness the quality of human faculty at our disposal to redefine the JCI Ikeja dream - lest the labour of our heroes past be in vain - and reaffirm that fundamental truth - that out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope, and where we are met with cynicism and doubt, and those who tell us that we can't, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people: yes, we can.

We cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today.

Let us live for posterity and not PROSPERITY.

Wouldn't you rather be part of the FUTURE?

Thank you, God bless you all , and may God bless Junior Chamber International Ikeja.

Olamide Akin-Balogun (JCIN Amb)
2016 Local Organization President
